Cherokee Village is a planned residential community in the Sharp County foothills of northern Arkansas, developed beginning in the late 1950s by Cooper Communities as one of the earliest large-scale master-planned lake communities in the American South. Golf was woven into the community's identity from the start, and the South Course stands as one of 2 18-hole layouts serving residents and guests of this self-contained village — an unusual depth of golf infrastructure for a community of its size in a rural corner of the Ozarks.
The terrain here is classic Arkansas hill country: rolling, wooded, and shaped by the kinds of ridges and creek drainages that make the Ozark foothills visually compelling and strategically interesting. Courses built into this landscape tend to reward course management over raw power, with elevation changes and tree-lined corridors that frame shots and punish wayward ones.
As a residential community course, the South Course serves a membership that treats it as a home track — familiar, social, and regularly walked. That kind of course earns its reputation through consistency and character rather than spectacle.
