Few resort golf destinations in northern Michigan carry the legacy that Garland Lodge & Resort has built over decades in Lewiston. The Monarch is 1 of 4 full-length courses on the property — a genuinely rare concentration of golf in a single location — and the resort itself has long drawn players from across the Midwest who come specifically for the variety and volume of holes on offer. Garland occupies a stretch of Otsego County forest in the northern Lower Peninsula, where jack pines, hardwoods, and the rolling terrain shaped by glacial activity define the landscape.
Northern Michigan golf has a character all its own: the season is compressed, the air carries a genuine chill well into May and again by October, and the wooded corridors demand shape and patience off the tee. Garland leans into that aesthetic fully, with fairways routed through dense tree lines that reward accuracy over raw power.
As a resort layout, the Monarch is designed to challenge without punishing — a card that serious golfers can respect and returning visitors can come back to season after season without exhausting its demands.
