Few American clubs carry a nickname as earned as "the Riviera of the West." Designed by George Thomas and Billy Bell and opened in 1927, Riviera Country Club became the proving ground for a generation of champions, and its place among the greatest courses in the world has never seriously been challenged. Ben Hogan won here so many times in the late 1940s that the club became forever linked to him — the name "Hogan's Alley" still echoes across the grounds. The course hosted the U.S. Open in 1948, the PGA Championship twice, and has been home to the Genesis Invitational (formerly the Los Angeles Open) for decades, making it one of the most continuously televised venues in professional golf.
Thomas's design rewards strategic thinking over raw power. The par-3 6th, with its famous bunker in the center of the green, is one of the most copied and discussed short holes in golf history. The routing flows through a canyon of mature eucalyptus, creating a sense of isolation from the surrounding city that feels almost theatrical.
Pacific Palisades sits between Santa Monica and Malibu, and the mild coastal climate keeps Riviera's kikuyu-grass fairways in year-round condition. This is not a course you visit — it is one you seek out, earn access to, and remember.
