Maumee Bay Resort

Arthur Hills designed this layout on the southwestern shore of Lake Erie, opening in 1991 as the centerpiece of Maumee Bay State Park. Hills worked with a site that offers something genuinely rare in Ohio — open, windswept lakeside terrain — and built a course that plays differently depending on the day's breeze off the water. The design leans on wetlands, native grasses, and low-lying topography to create strategic interest without manufactured drama, rewarding players who manage the wind and keep the ball below the flags.

Oregon, Ohio sits just east of Toledo in the Lake Erie shoreline corridor, a stretch of the Midwest that most golfers overlook but that carries real character: big sky, migratory bird flyways, and the kind of flat, exposed land where weather arrives fast and changes the equation on nearly every hole.

As a state park resort course, Maumee Bay is genuinely public and draws a wide range of players, from families staying at the lodge to serious golfers who come specifically for the links-influenced conditions. It ranks among the more distinctive state-park golf experiences in the Great Lakes region.
