Few golf settings anywhere in the world match the sheer drama of Rancho Palos Verdes, where the Palos Verdes Peninsula drops sharply into the Pacific. Trump National occupies that clifftop terrain with full commitment — Pete Dye designed the course, which opened in 2006 after a famously complex development history involving unstable coastal bluffs, and the result is one of the most visually arresting rounds in American golf. Several holes play directly along the ocean edge, with the Pacific serving as more than backdrop — it shapes wind patterns, distorts distance perception, and has a way of making a straightforward shot feel anything but.
The course carries a reputation for difficulty that goes beyond the numbers. Dye's bunkering and the relentless exposure to ocean breezes demand ball-striking precision and course management. The layout has hosted LPGA and PGA Tour events, and its conditioning has generally been held to a standard befitting its ambitions.
