Tail of the Whale

The Tail of the Whale — Punta Mita's celebrated ocean-hugging layout — occupies one of the most dramatic pieces of golf real estate in Latin America. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2008 as the second course at the Four Seasons Punta Mita resort, it was built to push further into the Pacific than its older sibling, the Pacifico course, achieving something genuinely rare: a routing that wrings oceanfront exposure from nearly every hole. The design earned instant acclaim and helped cement Punta Mita's standing as a world-class golf destination on Mexico's Riviera Nayarit.

The course's signature is its relationship with the sea. Multiple holes play along clifftops above crashing Pacific surf, and the wind off the water is a constant, invisible hazard that renders yardage almost irrelevant on certain days. The layout suits a resort audience without being a pushover — errant shots find lava rock, tropical vegetation, and steep coastal drops.

Punta Mita sits on a private peninsula about 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, where the Sierra Madre meets the coast. The surrounding estuary and jungle are part of a protected ecological zone, giving the course a backdrop that feels genuinely wild — frigate birds overhead, whales offshore in winter — rather than manicured.
