Few private clubs in the Milwaukee area carry the historical weight of Blue Mound Golf and Country Club. Founded in 1926 and designed by the legendary Donald Ross, the course stands as one of Wisconsin's most significant pieces of golf architecture — a genuine Ross original at a time when the Scottish-born master was reshaping American golf from coast to coast. His characteristic fingerprints are everywhere: crowned, false-fronted greens that repel timid approaches, subtle fairway contours that reward local knowledge, and a routing that makes intelligent use of the rolling terrain of the Wauwatosa landscape west of Milwaukee.
Blue Mound has the pedigree to match its design heritage. The club hosted the 1930 Western Open, won by none other than Gene Sarazen, placing it firmly in the narrative of American golf's golden era. It has also served as a regular host of Wisconsin state amateur competitions over the decades.
The par-70 layout is a reminder that Ross never needed length to create a genuine examination. Shot-making, imagination, and a respect for the ground game matter far more here than raw distance.
