Few courses in the Lowcountry carry the design pedigree of Bulls Bay Golf Club. The work of architect Mike Strantz, who created only a handful of courses before his death in 2005, Bulls Bay is widely regarded as one of his finest achievements — and by extension one of the most distinctive layouts in the American Southeast. Strantz was known for bold, artistic routing decisions and holes that demand imagination rather than mere execution, and Bulls Bay delivers that in full. The course has earned serious national attention and consistently draws golfers willing to travel specifically for it.
Awendaw sits just north of Charleston on the edge of the Francis Marion National Forest, where the South Carolina coast gives way to tidal marshes, maritime forest, and the kind of light that makes late-afternoon rounds feel cinematic. Bulls Bay itself — the actual body of water — shapes the course's identity, with marsh and water views threading through multiple holes and the salt air never far away.
This is a destination worth planning around, not a casual stopover. The routing rewards players who think their way around a golf course, and the setting ensures that even a difficult round is an aesthetically rewarding one.
