Whickham Golf Club sits on the southern fringe of the Tyne & Wear conurbation, occupying high ground above the River Derwent valley where the landscape transitions from urban Tyneside into the gentler, wooded countryside of County Durham. The elevation delivers long views across the region, and like many heathland-influenced parkland courses in this part of northeast England, the terrain tends to do much of the design work — fairways that tumble and lean with the hillside, and greens that reward local knowledge.
Founded in the late 19th century, Whickham is one of the older clubs in a region with a genuinely deep golfing culture. The northeast has quietly produced serious players for generations, and its members' clubs tend to carry that same understated seriousness — well-kept, community-rooted, and properly competitive without the pageantry of a resort destination.
The par-71 layout means expect at least one par-5 concession and a configuration that plays slightly shorter in card terms than a conventional par-72, but Tyneside winds and rolling ground have a habit of making courses here feel considerably more demanding than any number on a scorecard suggests.
