Nainital's golf course sits at roughly 6,800 feet in the Kumaon Himalayan foothills, making it one of the highest-altitude layouts in India and one of the oldest — the club dates to the British colonial era, when Nainital served as the summer capital of the United Provinces. That heritage is still palpable: the course rolls across terrain shaped more by the mountains than by any architect's plan, demanding adaptation and imagination rather than raw power.

The setting is genuinely dramatic. Nainital town is built around a crescent lake (Naini Tal), and the surrounding ridgelines and deodar cedar forests frame almost every hole. The thin air and uneven lie combine to humble golfers who arrive expecting a conventional round.
