Few private clubs in the American Midwest carry the quiet prestige of Sand Ridge. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1998, it consistently ranks among the top 100 courses in the United States — often higher — and is widely regarded as one of the finest private layouts in Ohio. Fazio sculpted the property in Geauga County to evoke a rumpled, heathland character that feels genuinely removed from the suburban Cleveland sprawl to the west, routing holes through mature hardwoods and across terrain that rolls with surprising drama for northeastern Ohio.
The course rewards shotmakers who can shape the ball both ways. Fazio's bunkering is meticulous without feeling punitive, and the greens tend toward firm, contoured surfaces that make approach angle a genuine strategic consideration. Members speak particularly highly of the back nine, where the routing tightens and the atmosphere deepens.
Chardon sits in the heart of Ohio's so-called Snow Belt, where lake-effect weather from Lake Erie can make the season feel compressed but the lush growing conditions genuinely exceptional — giving Sand Ridge a richness of turf that photographs rarely do justice.
