Maclean Golf Club occupies one of the more unusual addresses in Australian golf — Woodford Island, a river flat island community in the Clarence River delta of northern New South Wales. Getting here involves a short punt ferry crossing, which immediately signals that this isn't your standard suburban round. The Clarence Valley is broad, fertile country, and the course sits within that floodplain landscape: flat terrain, river views, and the kind of humid, subtropical air that softens the ground and keeps the grass lush through much of the year.
Maclean itself is a proudly Scottish-heritage town — the telegraph poles are painted in clan tartans — and the golf club carries that community character. This is a genuine country members' club, the type where local knowledge matters and visitors are welcomed into a relaxed, unhurried culture rather than a commercial operation.
