Few public golf courses in America have a setting quite like this one. The Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course runs along the Lake Michigan shoreline on Chicago's North Side, occupying a narrow strip of Lincoln Park with the city skyline rising to the south and open water stretching east. Playing here means navigating lake winds that shift without warning, turning a straightforward round into something genuinely unpredictable. The course is famously walkable, strung along the lakefront path where joggers, cyclists, and dog walkers pass within feet of the fairways.
Originally opened in 1932 and long known simply as Waveland, the course was renamed to honor a longtime Chicago Park District president. It operates under the Chicago Park District and remains one of the most-played public layouts in the country — tee times are hard to come by on summer mornings, and the waiting area has a culture all its own.
This is municipal golf as urban experience. The course itself is modest and forgiving, but that's almost beside the point. What Marovitz sells is the combination of a world-class city backdrop and genuine lakefront atmosphere, all for a public green fee.
