Port Orchard sits on the Kitsap Peninsula, across Puget Sound from Seattle, in one of the Pacific Northwest's most dramatically beautiful — and reliably wet — corners. McCormick Woods Golf Club grew out of the master-planned residential community of the same name, and the course wraps through the neighborhood's dense stands of Douglas fir and cedar, the kind of towering old-growth canopy that makes you feel genuinely small. The layout uses that tree cover as its primary defense, demanding accuracy off the tee more than raw distance.
The course has built a strong local following over the decades and is consistently regarded as one of the better public-access options on the Kitsap Peninsula, drawing players from across the Sound who make the ferry trip part of the experience. The conditioning tends to be a point of pride here — the grounds crew works hard to keep things playable despite the region's gray, wet winters.
For visiting golfers, this is Pacific Northwest golf in its most honest form: moody skies, soft fairways, the occasional bald eagle overhead, and enough tree-lined corridor to punish anything crooked. Come with patience for the weather and respect for the rough.
