De Zalze Golf Course

De Zalze sits within the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, one of South Africa's most storied towns and the heartland of the Cape Winelands. The course was designed by Peter Matkovich, one of the country's most prolific course architects, and opened in the early 2000s as part of a residential and wine estate development. It occupies a magnificent piece of ground where the Jonkershoek and Stellenbosch mountain ranges form a dramatic backdrop, and mature fynbos, vineyards, and stands of old oak trees define the character of the layout.

Matkovich routed the holes through a varied landscape that alternates between open, wind-exposed stretches and more sheltered corridors lined with indigenous vegetation. Water comes into play on several holes, and the Cape's notorious south-easter can make club selection a genuine puzzle on any given afternoon.

The estate setting means the course carries a residential and lifestyle feel — the golf is serious enough to challenge single-figure players, but the overall experience leans toward relaxed enjoyment, fine wine nearby, and one of the more scenic settings you'll find in South African golf.
