Few European tournament venues carry Montreux's particular blend of Alpine grandeur and genuine championship pedigree. The Jack Nicklaus–designed layout opened in 1993 and almost immediately became home to the European Tour's Omega European Masters, drawing the sport's elite into the Rhône Valley year after year. Nicklaus routed the course through the vineyards and orchards of the Chablais foothills, with the Dents du Midi and the broader Bernese Alps forming a backdrop that demands a moment of deliberate attention before every swing.

The course plays through varied terrain — tight, tree-lined stretches giving way to more open vineyard-framed fairways — and the Alps' vertical presence means weather can shift quickly, turning a calm morning into a breezy, demanding afternoon. The Rhône Valley floor keeps the layout relatively accessible in terms of elevation change underfoot, but Nicklaus built in enough strategic complexity to have consistently challenged European Tour fields.

Aigle itself is a compact market town at the southern end of Lake Geneva's influence, better known for wine production than for golf, which only adds to the feeling that this course occupies genuinely rare ground.
