Northern Michigan golf has a reputation that extends well beyond the state's borders, and Elk Ridge Golf Club in Atlanta sits at the heart of that tradition. Atlanta is the self-proclaimed "Elk Capital of Michigan," a small town in Montmorency County deep in the northern Lower Peninsula, where the terrain shifts into rolling hardwood forests, clear creeks, and the kind of open sky that reminds you how far you are from the interstate. This is true north woods golf country, and the setting alone makes the drive worthwhile.
Elk Ridge is a full 18-hole, par-72 layout built into that wooded landscape, and the natural environment does much of the design work. Courses in this region tend to reward course management over raw power — the trees are real hazards, not scenery, and the seasons are vivid. Fall in Montmorency County is genuinely spectacular, making autumn rounds here among the most visually rewarding in the Midwest.
Atlanta draws hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts year-round, and Elk Ridge fits naturally into that culture. It's the kind of course that belongs to its place rather than imposing on it.
