Few public golf courses in the United States carry a reputation quite like Wailua's. Repeatedly ranked among the best municipal courses in the country — and one of the finest public tracks in Hawaii — this Kauai layout has earned its standing not through luxury trappings but through the quality of the golf itself. Designed with the natural terrain of the island's eastern shore in mind, the course plays along a stretch of coastline where the trade winds are as much a part of the challenge as any bunker or slope. Reading the breeze correctly, not just the yardage, is what separates a good round from a great one here.
Lihue sits on the eastern side of Kauai, the oldest and arguably most dramatic of the main Hawaiian Islands, where the interior rises into the rain-soaked peaks of Wai'ale'ale and the coast opens to long views of the Pacific. That setting gives Wailua a sense of scale that most courses simply cannot manufacture.
For visiting golfers, the combination of exceptional value — county-run green fees — and genuine scenic and strategic quality makes Wailua something of an obligation. It rewards patience and shot-shaping, and it does so against a backdrop that reminds you exactly where you are.
