Few towns in Florida carry the same blue-collar, sugarcane-country identity as Clewiston, a small city on the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee that bills itself as "America's Sweetest Town." The surrounding landscape is flat, wide, and agricultural — fields of sugarcane stretching to the horizon, the massive lake just to the north, and the subtropical climate that makes golf here a year-round proposition, though summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms have their say.
The course itself fits its community well: a municipal layout serving a working town rather than a resort crowd, the kind of place where locals know each other by name on the first tee and the game is taken seriously without being precious about it. South Florida's signature vegetation — palms, subtropical scrub, and water features that collect every errant shot — gives the round its regional flavor.
For visiting golfers, Clewiston offers a chance to play in genuinely unhyped Florida terrain, far from the tourist corridors of the coasts and closer to the state's older, quieter interior character.
