Few Scottish courses arrive with quite the theatrical backdrop that Rowallan Castle provides. The layout occupies the estate grounds surrounding Rowallan Castle, a striking 16th-century tower house near Kilmaurs in East Ayrshire, and that ancient stone presence gives the round a sense of occasion from the first tee. This is Ayrshire golf with a distinctly romantic, estate-course character — something apart from the links tradition that defines the coastline a short drive to the west.
East Ayrshire's inland terrain runs to rolling farmland and woodland, and the course works through that kind of varied, open-but-sheltered ground. The par of 73 hints at a design generous with par 5s, giving players room to score while the Scottish wind and undulating lies ensure the card is never easily surrendered.
Ayrshire as a whole carries enormous weight in golf history — Troon and Turnberry are neighbours in spirit if not in style — and Rowallan offers a different, quieter pleasure: an estate round where the setting does much of the talking.
