Banstead Downs

Few clubs in Greater London can claim a history as long as Banstead Downs, which traces its origins to the 1880s and stands among the oldest courses in the south of England. The layout occupies a stretch of genuine Surrey downland — open, breezy chalk country on the North Downs escarpment — and that landscape shapes everything about how the course plays. Short grass, firm turf, and unpredictable bounces are part of the deal, and the wind across the exposed ground can turn a comfortable round into something far more demanding.

The design reflects the classic inland downland tradition: natural contours rather than manufactured drama, with the terrain doing most of the work. It is the kind of course where reading the ground matters as much as striking the ball, and where local knowledge earns its reputation over time.

Banstead sits just inside the M25, close enough to central London that it draws a broad membership, yet the surroundings retain a surprisingly rural feel — the chalk hills and open sky giving little away to the city pressing in from the north.
