Mahoney Golf Course has served Lincoln's public golfers for decades as one of the city's accessible, everyday tracks — the kind of place where the game stays affordable and the tee sheet stays open. Named in connection with the Mahoney park and recreation legacy that runs through much of Nebraska's public lands tradition, it sits within a city that takes its municipal golf seriously, operating several courses that collectively give residents genuine options without requiring a club membership.
Lincoln occupies the eastern edge of Nebraska's Tallgrass prairie country, where the land rolls gently and the sky feels enormous in every direction. That open, windswept character tends to define golf here — club selection is rarely simple, and a course that plays straightforward on a calm morning can turn demanding by afternoon when the Great Plains wind picks up across exposed fairways.
At par 70, Mahoney plays shorter than a full championship layout, which positions it well as a course where newer golfers can build confidence and regulars can work on scoring rather than just survival. A comfortable, unpretentious round on the prairie.
