Willingers Golf Club sits in Northfield, a small city about 35 miles south of Minneapolis that most people know for its 1876 Jesse James bank raid and its pair of liberal arts colleges — Carleton and St. Olaf. The surrounding Dakota County landscape is classic southern Minnesota: rolling glacial terrain, oak savanna, and open farmland that give golf courses here a natural topography to work with, far removed from the flat-earth stereotype outsiders attach to the state.
The course plays to a par 72 across terrain that takes full advantage of the area's wooded ridges and open, wind-exposed stretches — a combination that defines Minnesota golf at its best. Summers here are lush and genuinely beautiful, though the season is compressed, which tends to sharpen local golfers' appreciation for every round they get.
Willingers operates as a semi-private club, offering the feel of a members' course — maintained conditions, a defined golf community — while remaining accessible to outside play. For Twin Cities-area golfers willing to make the drive south, it's a legitimate destination round rather than a stopgap option.
