Few public courses in central Pennsylvania generate the kind of word-of-mouth that Mayapple does. Designed by Steve Smyers and opened in 2004, the layout sits in the rolling Cumberland Valley farmland just outside Carlisle, and it earned serious attention almost immediately — Golf Digest ranked it among the best new affordable public courses in the country shortly after it opened. Smyers, a Florida-based architect with a reputation for crafting courses that reward thoughtful play over raw power, built something here that feels distinctly more ambitious than the typical daily-fee track.
The Cumberland Valley is excellent golf country — broad, gently contoured terrain broken by tree lines and ridgelines, with the Blue Ridge foothills providing a scenic backdrop. Mayapple uses that landscape well, with holes that move through open meadows and wooded corridors, asking players to manage their angles off the tee rather than simply overpower the course.
The result is a layout that plays differently on the way out than on the way back, and one that rewards return visits. For anyone passing through the Carlisle corridor — or willing to make a dedicated trip — Mayapple consistently punches well above its category.
