Few public courses in western Pennsylvania carry the reputation Olde Stonewall has earned since opening in 1999. Designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, the course was carved through the rugged, rocky hillsides of Lawrence County and quickly drew national attention — Golf Digest ranked it among the best new public courses in the country the year it opened. The name references the old stone walls that crisscross the property, remnants of the farmland that once occupied this terrain, and those walls remain a defining visual and strategic element throughout the round.
The Hurdzan-Fry design leans into the natural drama of the site rather than fighting it. Elevation changes are significant, fairways thread through rock outcroppings and mature hardwoods, and the routing rewards players who shape shots and think their way around. The par-70 layout plays shorter on paper than it does on the ground — the terrain extracts its toll.
Ellwood City sits about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, and Olde Stonewall fits naturally into western Pennsylvania's serious golf culture — a region that has produced major champions and expects its courses to have genuine character. This one delivers it.
