Amuri Golf Course sits in the upper Waiau Valley of North Canterbury, a high country district where the Southern Alps rise sharply to the west and the landscape opens into wide tussock flats and braided riverbeds. Rotherham is a small rural service town near the heart of Hurunui District, and the golf here reflects that agricultural character — a community course shaped by and for the farming families and station workers of the surrounding sheep and cattle country.
The Amuri district takes its name from the Māori word for the region, and the course carries that same unhurried rural identity. Expect honest, unfussy golf on an open layout where the mountain backdrop does much of the scenic work and the Canterbury nor'wester can turn a straightforward card into something considerably more demanding. Conditions shift quickly in this valley, and wind reading becomes as important as club selection.
For travellers passing through on the Inland Scenic Route between Christchurch and the Kaikōura Coast, Amuri offers the kind of unpretentious, sociable golf that small-town New Zealand still does exceptionally well.
