Collingtree Park occupies a distinctive place in English golf history as the first European course designed by Jack Nicklaus, opened in 1990. The Golden Bear's imprint is unmistakable — generous fairways framed by strategic water features and subtle contouring that rewards course management over brute force. It sits on the southern fringe of Northampton, built on parkland terrain that Nicklaus shaped into something more deliberate and American in sensibility than the typical English heathland or links layout.
The course built an early reputation on the European Tour, hosting the British Masters in the mid-1990s and attracting a field of genuine world-class players. That tournament pedigree gives Collingtree a credibility that many parkland courses in the Midlands simply cannot match. The par 70 layout plays shorter than many championship venues, but the Nicklaus routing uses water prominently enough that scoring is rarely as straightforward as the card might suggest.
Northampton itself sits in the heart of the East Midlands, a county with a respectable spread of golf options, but Collingtree's combination of Tour heritage and a marquee design name still makes it the most talked-about course in the immediate area.
