Calais sits at the northeastern edge of Maine, directly across the St. Croix River from St. Stephen, New Brunswick — making this one of the most genuinely border-straddling golf communities in North America. The St. Croix River itself forms an international boundary here, and for generations the club has drawn members from both sides, giving it a binational character that's quietly unusual in American private golf.
Maine's Downeast region is rugged and unsparing: short summers, Atlantic-influenced weather that can turn quickly, and a landscape shaped by spruce forests, tidal rivers, and exposed granite. Golf here is honest and unhurried, without the resort polish of Kennebunkport or the celebrity of Bethpage. Washington County — the least-populated county in Maine — produces a different kind of golf culture, one built on community and longevity rather than destination appeal.
