Few clubs in the Thames Valley carry as much quiet history as Sonning Golf Club. Founded in 1914, the course sits just outside the village of Sonning-on-Thames, one of the most picturesque riverside settlements in southern England — a place of brick-and-flint cottages, mill ponds, and weeping willows trailing into the water. The club has long been a cherished fixture among Berkshire's strong golfing community, which also includes nearby heavyweights like The Berkshire and Caversham Heath.
The course itself winds through mature deciduous woodland, and its tree-lined fairways demand accuracy off the tee rather than raw distance. A par 70 layout rewards strategic thinking and clean ball-striking over power, and the relatively compact design means the course plays with more bite than a first glance suggests. Autumn, when the oaks and beeches turn, is widely regarded as the finest season to play here.
Reading sits at the western edge of Greater London's commuter belt, meaning Sonning draws a knowledgeable, regular membership rather than a passing resort crowd — a proper members' club with the unhurried, convivial atmosphere that goes with it.
