Show Low sits at nearly 6,400 feet on Arizona's Mogollon Rim, where the scorched desert of the lower state gives way to one of the largest ponderosa pine forests in North America. It's a genuinely different Arizona than most visitors expect — cooler summers, dramatic elevation changes, and a landscape that feels closer to the mountain West than the Sonoran. Golf up here plays differently too: the altitude adds distance to every club, the air is dry and thin, and afternoon monsoon storms can roll in fast during summer months.
Bison Golf Club takes its name from the rugged high-country character of the White Mountains region, and as a public 18-hole layout it serves both the local community and the steady stream of Phoenix-area golfers who make the roughly 3-hour drive to escape the valley heat. Show Low and neighboring Pinetop-Lakeside form a modest but genuine golf destination, with several courses drawing desert dwellers seeking pine-shaded fairways and cooler playing conditions.
At par 71, the course plays slightly shorter than a traditional championship layout, which tends to reward precision and course management over raw power — a sensible design approach for mountain terrain where uneven lies and tree-lined corridors demand attention.
