Kitimat sits at the head of the Douglas Channel in northwestern British Columbia, a town carved out of the coastal wilderness in the early 1950s to house workers for the Alcan aluminum smelter — one of the most deliberate acts of city-building in Canadian history. The surrounding landscape is dramatic and unforgiving: dense temperate rainforest, glacier-fed creeks, and mountains that crowd the sky on every side. Golf here is not a polished resort experience but something more genuine — a community course serving a working town at the edge of the inhabited world.
Hirsch Creek takes its name from one of the waterways threading through this part of the Kitimat River valley, and the "Winter Club" designation signals that this facility serves its members across seasons, not just the warmer months. At 18 holes and par 72, it offers a full-length test, though the real character here comes from the setting: coastal BC rainforest golf, where the air is heavy with moisture and the rough means it.
For visiting golfers, Hirsch Creek represents something increasingly rare — a course that exists entirely for its community rather than for tourism. Expect genuine local hospitality, unhurried rounds, and scenery that most golfers never encounter.
