Porters Neck Country Club sits in the northern reaches of Wilmington, in a part of coastal North Carolina where the landscape shifts between maritime forest, tidal marsh, and the brackish waterways feeding into the Cape Fear River basin. The Tom Fazio design — opened in 1991 — carries all the hallmarks of his work: generous landing areas that nonetheless demand proper angles, seamless movement between holes, and a course that feels harder than it looks until the scorecard tells the story at the end.
The layout earned real national recognition through the LPGA Tour, hosting the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic and later the Corning Classic in the 1990s, giving the membership a rare window into top-level professional competition. Fazio used the low-lying coastal terrain to route holes through corridors of longleaf pine and around wetland carries, rewarding golfers who work the ball rather than simply overpower it.
Wilmington has quietly built one of the better private golf scenes on the Carolina coast, and Porters Neck sits near the top of that list — a course with genuine architectural pedigree and the kind of setting that makes a round feel unhurried and purposeful.
