Few courses in New England carry a name as distinctive as Crumpin-Fox, and the layout itself lives up to the intrigue. Designed by Roger Rulewich — a longtime associate of Robert Trent Jones Sr. — and opened in 1977, this members' club in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts has earned a reputation as one of the region's more demanding and rewarding tests. It has appeared consistently in Massachusetts' top-course rankings, drawing players from well beyond Franklin County who make the trip specifically for the challenge.
The course occupies rolling, heavily wooded terrain in the foothills of the Berkshires, and that topography defines everything about how it plays. Elevation changes are real and consequential, tree corridors demand shape and precision, and the routing gives a genuine sense of moving through untamed New England landscape rather than land that has simply been cleared and seeded.
Bernardston sits near the Vermont border, just off I-91, which makes Crumpin-Fox accessible from both the Pioneer Valley and southern Vermont — a course worth planning around, not just stumbling upon.
