Green Valley sits in the Santa Cruz Valley about 25 miles south of Tucson, ringed by the Santa Rita and Quinlan mountain ranges and characterized by the high Sonoran Desert terrain that defines golf in this part of southern Arizona. Torres Blancas — Spanish for "white towers," a reference to the saguaro-studded ridgelines and limestone outcroppings that frame the area — plays through this rugged, sun-baked landscape where elevation and thin desert air are constant companions.
The Sonoran Desert is not a passive backdrop. Saguaro cacti, palo verde trees, and desert scrub line virtually every corridor in this region, and courses here demand accuracy and course management over raw power. The desert itself is the hazard, and learning to work with the terrain rather than against it is the real challenge of southern Arizona golf.
Green Valley has long been a destination for winter visitors and retirees drawn by mild temperatures and near-constant sunshine, and the local golf scene reflects that — relaxed in atmosphere but serious enough about the game to reward players who bring both patience and respect for the desert setting.
