Globe sits in the high desert of Gila County, about 90 miles east of Phoenix, where the terrain shifts dramatically from the Valley's flat sprawl into rugged, mineral-rich mountains. The town owes its identity to copper mining — "cobre" is Spanish for copper — and that industrial heritage gives this corner of Arizona a grittier, more authentic character than the resort corridors to the west. Cobre Valley Country Club serves the local community as a private members' club in a region where golf is a genuine amenity rather than a tourist draw. Courses in this part of the Arizona high desert tend to play firm and fast, with natural arroyos and rocky terrain shaping holes in ways no architect could fully manufacture.
