Smithfield sits in Cache Valley, a broad agricultural basin in northern Utah framed by the Bear River Mountains to the east and the Wellsville Mountains to the west — one of the more scenic settings you'll find on a public golf itinerary in the Intermountain West. The valley floor is flat and open, which means courses here tend to play exposed to the wind, and Birch Creek is no exception. Spring rounds can be breezy and cool, summers are warm and clear, and the fall color coming off the surrounding peaks makes for some of the most pleasant golf weather in the state.
As a public facility serving Cache Valley's communities — Logan, Smithfield, and the surrounding towns — Birch Creek fills the role of the everyday local course: approachable, affordable, and genuinely useful to golfers of all abilities. That kind of course tends to develop a loyal following of regulars who know every bounce and subtle break.
Cache Valley has a modest but earnest golf culture, and a par-72 layout at this elevation rewards straight ball-striking more than power. If you're passing through on a trip up from Salt Lake City or across from Idaho, it's a comfortable, unhurried place to get a round in.
