Few public golf courses in America carry as much civic history as William J. Devine Golf Course in Franklin Park, one of Frederick Law Olmsted's masterwork urban greenspaces in Boston. The course traces its roots to 1896, making it one of the oldest municipal layouts in the country, and it sits within a landscape that Olmsted himself designed — a rare distinction that gives the property a grandeur no private club can manufacture. The layout has long served as a cornerstone of golf access for Boston's diverse communities, particularly for Black golfers during the decades of segregation when private clubs were closed to them.
