Death Valley holds a legitimate world record that has nothing to do with golf — the hottest air temperature ever reliably recorded on Earth — and yet here sits a working 18-hole golf course at roughly 214 feet below sea level, itself the lowest elevation golf course on the planet. Furnace Creek Golf Course is not a novelty act, though. It's a genuine desert layout routed through the grounds of the historic Furnace Creek Resort, shaded by date palms imported generations ago, with the Panamint Range rising dramatically to the west and the valley floor stretching out in its eerie, bone-dry vastness.
Playing here is an experience driven almost entirely by context. The air is dense at that sub-sea-level elevation, which means the ball carries farther than expected — a small but real physics quirk worth knowing before you club up. Winter is the season; summers here are not survivable for outdoor recreation by any reasonable definition.
Furnace Creek belongs to a rare category of golf destinations where the landscape does all the talking. The course itself is modest and approachable, but no round elsewhere will feel remotely like this one.
