Deer Isle sits in the waters of Penobscot Bay, connected to the Maine mainland by a slender suspension bridge that has been making drivers grip their steering wheels since 1939. It's a place of working lobstermen, weathered spruce forests, and granite shorelines — and it's the kind of island community where a private golf club feels less like an amenity and more like a genuine gathering point for the people who live and summer here.
Island Country Club's par 68 signals right away that this is not a course trying to replicate a mainland parkland layout. Shorter par 4s, likely a handful of par 3s, and a routing shaped by the real constraints of island terrain are the hallmarks of this kind of layout — one where shot-making and local knowledge matter more than raw power, and where the same familiar holes reward years of membership.
Coastal Maine golf has a character all its own: salt air, morning fog rolling off the bay, and rounds played against a backdrop that no inland course can manufacture. Whatever its length, Island Country Club almost certainly offers that — and on an island like Deer Isle, that's the whole point.
