Few municipal courses carry as much civic weight as Harding. Part of the Griffith Park golf complex in Los Angeles, it has operated as a public course since the 1920s, making it one of the oldest municipal layouts in California. The course was redesigned by renowned architect Robert Muir Graves in the late 20th century, and a more recent restoration effort — completed around 2018 by architect Ross Mackenzie — returned it to something closer to its golden-age character, with restored bunkering, improved turf conditions, and a layout that finally feels worthy of its remarkable setting.
Griffith Park itself is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, and Harding sits within it surrounded by the dry chaparral hills that define the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. The terrain gives the course genuine topographic interest, and on a clear day the views toward the San Gabriel Mountains remind you that you're playing inside one of the world's great cities.
For Angelenos, Harding holds a sentimental place in the local golf culture — a course where serious players, beginners, and old-timers have all shared the same public ground for generations.
