Few private clubs in the Philadelphia region carry the quiet prestige of Lookaway Golf Club. Designed by A.W. Tillinghast and opened in 1926, the course stands among the celebrated Tillinghast layouts concentrated in and around the Delaware Valley — a region that also claims Pine Valley, Aronimink, and Philadelphia Cricket Club. At Lookaway, Tillinghast worked with the rolling, wooded terrain of Bucks County to produce a course that rewards strategic thinking and punishes casual play without ever feeling contrived or punitive.
Bucks County itself has a particular character — pastoral, historically rich, removed from the suburban sprawl that defines much of the region. Buckingham sits at its heart, where the land still folds and rises in ways that give a golf course genuine topographic interest. Tillinghast read that landscape well, and Lookaway's routing feels like it belongs to the ground rather than imposed upon it.
The club has remained deliberately low-profile over the decades, which only deepens its reputation among serious Philadelphia-area golfers. Access is private and members-only, and the exclusivity has helped preserve both the course's condition and its unhurried atmosphere.
