Bowood's golf course occupies one of the great English country estates — the Lansdowne family's Capability Brown-landscaped grounds in the heart of Wiltshire. The course was designed by Dave Thomas and opened in 1992, routing through the ancient parkland that surrounds the 18th-century house. Mature hardwoods, ornamental lakes, and the rolling Wiltshire countryside shape virtually every hole, making this a layout where the setting does as much work as the design itself.
Thomas routed the round through varied terrain, mixing tighter tree-lined holes with more open stretches across the estate's broader meadows. The parkland character rewards accurate iron play and course management over raw power, and the condition tends to be what you'd expect of a well-funded resort course within a protected historic landscape.
Wiltshire itself is underrated golf country — far enough from the metropolitan circuits to feel genuinely rural, close enough to the Cotswold fringe to draw visitors combining a round with wider touring. Staying at the hotel and playing the course makes for one of the more complete golf resort experiences in the West of England.
