Royal City sits in the heart of Washington's Columbia Basin, a high-desert plateau transformed by the Columbia Basin Project into some of the most productive irrigated farmland in the Pacific Northwest. Golf out here means wide-open skies, steady winds off the surrounding plateau, and a landscape that feels genuinely removed from the urban courses of the Puget Sound corridor — a different side of Washington entirely.
As a public course in a small agricultural community, Royal City offers the kind of straightforward, unpretentious round that has largely disappeared from more developed parts of the state. The Columbia Basin's climate brings hot, dry summers and relatively mild winters by Washington standards, which translates to a long playable season and firm, fast conditions through the summer months — a contrast to the soft, wet turf golfers associate with the state's western side.
The par-71 layout adds a subtle wrinkle to scoring expectations. That missing par suggests an asymmetry somewhere in the design — likely an extra par 3 or a shorter finishing stretch — giving the card a personality that rewards attention rather than assumption.
