Lions Municipal Golf Course

Few public courses in America carry as much civic and cultural weight as Lions Municipal. Known locally as "Muny," this West Austin layout has been a cornerstone of the city's golf life since the 1920s, and its history runs deeper than most private clubs could claim. Critically, it was one of the first municipal courses in Texas to be desegregated, making it a landmark not just in Austin's golf story but in the broader history of civil rights in the American South. The course occupies a rolling stretch of the Balcones Escarpment where the Texas Hill Country begins its rise out of the coastal plain — live oaks, cedar, and limestone outcroppings giving it a character that feels genuinely Texan rather than manufactured. It plays to a par of 71, and the terrain does the work that length alone cannot.

Muny has faced repeated threats of redevelopment over the decades, and the community's fierce resistance each time speaks to something real: this is a place where Austin learned to play golf, across generations and across the color line.
