Golf Club Ibar sits in Dolna Banya, a small spa town in the Sofia Province of western Bulgaria, positioned in the foothills of the Rila and Ihtiman Sredna Gora mountain ranges. The town has long been known for its mineral hot springs rather than its golf, which gives this facility an interesting dual identity — a course where the thermal wellness tradition of the region coexists with a sport that arrived here relatively recently as Bulgaria began developing its leisure and tourism infrastructure in earnest after the early 2000s.
Bulgaria's golf scene remains one of Europe's less-explored, with most international attention focused on the Black Sea coastal courses and the developments near Bansko and the Pirin Mountains. Dolna Banya occupies quieter, greener terrain — the surrounding landscape is genuinely mountain-influenced, with clean air, forested ridgelines, and the kind of views that make a round feel more expansive than the course's footprint might suggest.
The Ibar name references the broader sub-Balkan character of the area. For visiting golfers, this is a local and regional course rather than a destination layout, but it offers an honest, unpretentious round in a setting that most Western European golfers will never have experienced.
