Lake Fork is the name most Texas anglers know by heart — the reservoir just outside Emory has produced more ShareLunker bass than any other body of water in the state, and the golf club that shares its name sits right in that same corner of East Texas, where the Pineywoods begin to give way to the blackland prairies of the upper Sabine basin. It's the kind of setting where the sky opens wide and the landscape feels genuinely unhurried, a long way from the manicured intensity of the Metroplex courses roughly 70 miles to the west.
Rains County is small-town Texas in the most straightforward sense — Emory itself has fewer than 1,500 people — and a golf club here serves the local community first, without pretense. A par-72 layout at this level is about access and routine rounds, a place where regulars know each other by name and a tee time is never hard to come by.
What the area lacks in golf infrastructure it makes up for in atmosphere. Tall pines, red-clay soil, and the proximity to one of the state's most storied fishing lakes give Lake Fork Golf Club a sense of place that a more polished facility might actually envy.
