Few layouts in the Lowcountry make as strong a case for the marriage of golf and wetland ecology as Charleston National. Rees Jones designed the course, which opened in 1990, threading fairways through tidal marshes, maritime forest, and the salt-creek fingers that define this corner of coastal South Carolina. The result is a design that demands strategic thinking rather than pure power — miss fairways in the wrong direction here and the consequences are immediate and severe.
Mount Pleasant sits just across the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge from Charleston, and the course draws on that proximity to one of America's most historically rich cities while feeling genuinely removed from it. The surrounding marsh habitat gives the property a wild, open quality, with egrets, herons, and marsh grasses serving as constant reminders that this land belongs as much to the tidal ecosystem as to the game.
Charleston National operates as a semi-private club, meaning it has served both a loyal membership and visiting golfers wanting a serious, scenically dramatic test of the Lowcountry game.
