Middlebury sits in the Naugatuck Valley corridor of western Connecticut, a stretch of New England where glacially sculpted ridgelines, hardwood forests, and old stone walls define the terrain. Highfield Club is a private members' club operating in that tradition. Access is by membership, which means the course tends to maintain the unhurried, relationship-driven rhythm that defines genuine club golf — familiar faces, a pace dictated by the membership rather than the tee sheet, and a grounds crew accountable to people who play the same holes week after week. That kind of stewardship tends to show in the conditioning.
Connecticut's private club scene is quietly strong, drawing little of the national attention that courses in neighboring Massachusetts or coastal Rhode Island attract, but sustaining a loyal golfing culture all its own.
