Fontanals Golf

Few settings in European golf match the visual drama of the Cerdanya valley — a wide, flat plain roughly 1,100 meters above sea level, ringed on all sides by the Pyrenees and bathed in an extraordinary number of sunny days for a mountain region. Fontanals Golf occupies this landscape with a sense of ease and grandeur, the fairways opening against a panorama of snow-capped peaks that makes concentration genuinely difficult in the best possible way.

The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1990, and it carries the hallmarks of his work: generous landing areas rewarded by precise approach demands, greens with subtle, punishing contours, and a routing that uses the natural breadth of the valley floor without forcing drama artificially. The result plays more openly than the mountain address might suggest, though the Pyrenean altitude adds distance to every well-struck ball.

Fontanals sits on the French side of the Cerdanya, though the valley itself is famously shared — politically bisected but culturally unified — between France and Catalonia. Cross-border golf is almost a local tradition here, with several courses within easy reach on both sides of a frontier that feels largely symbolic at this elevation.
