Few stretches of Irish linksland carry a heavier weight of tradition than the sandhills of Portmarnock, a narrow peninsula north of Dublin where the land curls between the Irish Sea and an estuary tidal flat. This is the home of Portmarnock Golf Club — one of Ireland's most celebrated championship venues — but The Links Portmarnock is a separate property, a hotel-attached course occupying the same evocative peninsula and sharing its moody, windswept character. Designed by Bernhard Langer and opened in 1995, it offers visitors a genuine links experience in a location that would otherwise remain the preserve of one of golf's most selective private clubs.
The course plays across terrain that does what great linksland always does: it refuses to be predictable. Fescue-covered dunes, natural undulation, and the ever-present Irish wind conspire to make the same holes play entirely differently from one round to the next.
For visiting golfers, the Portmarnock peninsula represents a rare chance to sleep beside the sea and step onto true links turf. Dublin is close enough to reach easily, but out here among the dune grass and sea breezes, the city feels a long way away.
